Designer or illustrator? Which one do you need?

27/10/2025

Graphic designers and illustrators are often confused because many people aren't sure where the line is drawn between the two professions. Is an illustrator just a specialized designer? Are the terms synonyms? Or are they entirely different fields? There's a bit of truth in each... Let's dive in!

Let's explore the core responsibilities of both professionals:

  • The Illustrator: A visual specialist who uses images, drawings, and graphics to help people understand, enjoy, and interpret stories or concepts on a deeper level. They often work by hand—drawing or painting—or use digital tools that replicate these traditional methods. Their focus is on storytelling and emotional engagement.

  • The Graphic Designer: A specialist who processes and interprets information visually using various elements (mostly digital today), such as color, composition, and typography. They don't necessarily need hand-drawn elements to do their job. Their focus is on communicating information clearly and effectively.

In many cases, these two fields intertwine—take a book cover, for example. The illustrator creates the artwork, and using that piece, the graphic designer selects the appropriate typography, manages the color scheme, and handles the layout to determine where each element should be placed.
